Today, the last Sunday of the Church’s year, we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. It is one of the most beautiful and meaningful feasts of the year.
The concept of king and kingdom is at the very heart of Jesus’ message to us. He came among us to establish the Kingdom of God here on earth.
Our King has been chosen for us by God but it is for each one of us to profess our allegiance to him. We do this not just saying so in so many words but by taking on board the fullness of his life and teaching which we find in the Gospel and in the New Testament. And, as members of his Body, we too in some strange way share in that Kingship. Today we are called to work together to expand the reality of his Kingdom in our families, in our society and in the world generally.
Today we also celebrate Youth Sunday. The youth are often referred to as the church of the future but in reality they are the young church of today.
Young people of today seem to have a strong faith, demonstrated by their attendance at Diocesan events like the source, or national events like the Flame Congress and their support through their schools for worthy and charitable causes,
but sadly they do not attend Sunday mass on a regular basis. As a church we must begin to understand the reasons why and encourage them to re-engage with regular worship or the young church of today will not have a future.
Today is a chance to pray for them and the future of our church
