Happy Birthday

As we celebrate Pentecost this Sunday we are celebrating the birthday of the Church. Just like the day a baby emerges from its mother's womb and announces itself to the world, today marks the occasion when the apostles emerged from the shelter of the room and begin the life and work of the Church, spreading the Gospel to the whole world.

It is a life and work that begins full of the Holy Spirit and continues to this day filled with the same spirit. We remind ourselves of this when we say “I believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic church.” Holy because we are continually renewed by the Holy Spirit; Catholic because our mission is to the whole human race, symbolised by those who greet the apostles as they emerge at Pentecost; and Apostolic because we are built on the foundations of the Apostles, sent out spread the Gospel. As St Paul tells the Corinthians the way in which the Spirit is given to each of us is for a good purpose. Each of us has a part to play in continuing the work began at Pentecost, to discern how the Holy Spirit is working in us and through us, as the unique individuals we are, as part of the body of the church. In doing so we will show to the world the active presence of Jesus in our lives, through the gift of the Holy Spirit active in our lives. The gift that truly keeps on giving.
